What Is The Weather?

We have started our weather unit.  We are observing the weather each day and learning what causes the weather.  The students were so excited about the calendar we are using to record the weather that they asked to bring one home.  I am assembling all the pieces now and will send it home for February.  It is OPTIONAL.

We are going to have a Valentines Day party on Valentines Day.  We will be having ice cream sundaes and you are invited to join us from 1:30-2.  The students will then go to P.E..


We continue to build our reading muscles during Readers Workshop.  We are making our Picture Power stronger by looking at the picture to see who is in it, what is in it, and what the characters are doing.  We continue to practice our sight words too.

In Fundations, we are reading and spelling cvc words.  We also are writing uppercase letters.

We have finished our subtraction topic in math.  Our next topic is going to be working on addition and subtraction.  As an introduction, we played a game where I told stories about gold coins and the students had decide if it was an addition problem or a subtraction problem.
          

Winter is here!

This week we learned about Martin Luther King, Jr.  As we were reading a biography about Dr. King and we got to the part when things have changed, the students broke into spontaneous applause.  It was adorable!  We have such a caring group of kindergarteners.

We are building bigger reading muscles to read harder books.  We are looking at more sight words, endings on words (ing, ed, s), blends at the beginning of words (sl, cr, fr, bl, etc.).

In math, we have been using tools, drawing pictures, and writing equations for subtraction word problems.  We are learning that when we subtract, we take some away.

We continue to write every day.  The students are adding so many more details to their writing.  They are also adding more and more words to their writing.  At this point, we are encouraging students to sound out words and write the sounds they hear.  It is okay if a word is not spelled correctly.  It is more important for students to use the words they want and spell them incorrectly, than to only use words they now how to spell.
