Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!  We started the new year by reading a book about a squirrel who makes a resolution.  Then we wrote our own resolutions and added a colorful hat for a bulletin board called "Hats Off To A New Year!"

We are starting a new reading unit of study called Bigger Books, Bigger Reading Muscles.  We are learning how to become better readers by reading every day.  We read easy books, medium books and challenging books.  We use all our reading powers in all books.

In math, we have learned about subtraction.  Subtraction is taking away from a group.  It is also taking apart a number.  Practice subtraction ideas when playing with toys at home.  For example, there are 5 cars, two drive away.  How many are left?  You can practice during snacks.  You have 10 crackers.  Can you take apart ten into two groups?  How many are in each group?

We are learning about polar bears this week.  We have made an adorable bulletin board with directed drawings of polar bears.  After reading nonfiction books, we made a chart of our learning and wrote our own sentences.  We also checked in on polar bears in the Canadian tundra with a polar bear cam.

In writing, we chose our best piece of writing to save for our portfolios.  The rest of the writing was sent home.  We have several choices of paper available-blank, with lines, and books.

Book orders went home and are due next Friday.  You can order online with our class code GNNTW or send in the order.  Some times parents ask for recommendations. This month there are some great books-any of the Mo Willems books (The Pigeon, Knuffle Bunny, Elephant and Piggy), Pete the Cat, Fly Guy.
