We are Readers!

Thank you for sending in the apples.  The applesauce was delicious!  Each kindergartener washed an apple and used a plastic knife to cut the apple.  We put them in the crockpot and sprinkled them with cinnamon, and left them to cook all day and all night.  Most of the kids thought it was delicious, as did Mrs. Torres and I!

I have noticed a lot of toys coming in to kindergarten.  The kindergarteners do not need any toys or stuffed animals at school.  They are very distracting to our learning.

In Readers Workshop, we are building stamina in our reading.  We have some independent reading time and now we are adding partner reading to our routine.  We talked about Environmental Print.  We can read words like stop, legos, Disney Jr., Cheerios, and more.  I encouraged the students to look around for labels they could bring to school for a display.

In Writers Workshop, we have been working on drawing faces, bodies, and clothes to our people.  We are able to add lots of details to help tell our stories.

We are doing lots of activities for practicing letter and number formation.  There are some ways you can strengthen your child's hand muscles to get them ready for writing:
     *play with play doh
     *use a squeeze bottle
*use scissors (have them cut your coupons!)
     *open and close jars
     *open and close clothespins
     *crumple or rip paper
     *color with small broken crayons
     *play with squishy bath toys

In Fundations, we added the letters u and i to our daily chant.

We Love Apples!

We started this week with an apple taste test!  Next week we are going to make applesauce.  If each child brings in an apple, we will have plenty to make our applesauce in a crockpot.

In Readers Workshop, we have been learning how to care for books, the routines of Readers Workshop and how to read.  Here are some anchor charts we are using:

We have been practicing recognizing, naming, producing the sound and writing the following letters:

We have also started talking about Popcorn Words.  Those are words that pop up in our reading and writing that we need to know how to read and spell quickly.  We have been practicing the and is.

In Math, we are continuing to work on numbers 0 to 5.  One area that many kindergarteners could work on is forming the numbers.  At home, you can practice in fun ways like in the tub with bubbles on the wall, using sidewalk chalk, in the dirt with a stick, using finger paint, and on the refrigerator with magnets.
