An Apple A Day

This week we started learning about apples.  We began our week with a taste test.  Some of the children were surprised that they liked yellow or green apples the best.  Our results still indicated that red apples are the favorite.  We used the data to write a chart called "I Like Apples."  By writing a sentence for every student, we were able to practice matching our spoken words to print and noticing a period at the end of every sentence.

We have been introducing a new "Popcorn Word" each week.  A Popcorn Word is a word that pops up in our reading and writing.  We have been practicing to read and spell is, see, and the.  You can help your child practice these words at home in fun ways.  They love to find the words in books.  As you read, let your child read the popcorn words to you.  You can write the words on index cards to play Fish or Concentration.

In Math, we have been working on recognizing and counting with numbers to 10.  We learned that we could combine two five frames together to make a ten frame.  We played many of the games from last week with the ten frame.  If students can recognize what 7 looks like (a row of five with two more) without counting, their number concept improves and addition and subtraction will come more easily.  We are also practicing to write numerals.  You can practice writing numerals at home in the tub with soap, in the dirt with a stick, with finger paint, or on a dry erase board.

Some of the books we read this week include:
