We started a Discovery Table to share things we find out in nature. I brought in a milkweed pod from my yard and opened it for the students to see and touch. The next day a student brought in some more from her yard. It would be great if your child finds something (a leaf, rock, pinecone, acorn) to bring in and add to our Discovery Table. Please don't send in anything that is special as I don't want it to get damaged or lost!
In Fundations, we added the letters d and s to our daily practice. We also added the word like to our pocket chart. We have been practicing with rhyming and syllables. We practiced taking away part of a word, like say cupcake without the cup. We invited another teacher in to sing an alphabet song (to the tune "Where Is Thumbkin?") and teach us the alphabet in sign language. For some children, this kinesthetic activity helps them to learn the sounds.
In Readers Workshop, we practiced retelling a story like Goldilocks in different ways. We used a prop to tell the story (a Goldilocks figure) and acted it out with a play. We are continuing to practice the play.
We continued working on ways to make numbers with manipulatives like shells and paper squares, as well as coloring objects. We are trying to do it in an organized way so that we find all the different ways to build the number.
This week the school district practiced an earthquake drill as part of the Great Shake Out. The students had to Duck, Cover, and Hold.
Some of the books we read this week are:
*Just a note that we read many nonfiction books also, it is just more difficult to find an image of the book!
Our Halloween Party will be held at 1:00 on October 30. We will be having a special snack that day. Parents are welcome to join us. We do not wear our Halloween costumes at school.
Progress Reports will go home next Friday!
I will be out of the district at a workshop on Monday. There will be a substitute for the day!
