Mrs. McDonald's Farm

REMINDER:  Thursday, October 8, is an early dismissal day!

This week we started talking about farms.  We brainstormed a list of things we might see on the farm, read some farm books, and made a barn with animals (they look adorable!) to use while singing "Old MacDonald Had A Farm."  We will read some nonfiction books about farm animals next week and do some writing also.

In Math, we are working on counting to ten, writing numerals to ten, matching sets to ten.  We are really working hard to learn the proper way to write numerals and making sure we are accurate every  time we count.  During our Intervention block (or blue bucket centers) the students are learning to work with a partner, to take good care of materials and to clean up, in addition to math skills like sorting, counting, recognizing numbers, writing numerals, comparing numbers and more!  We start this time with a math journal and then move into these bucket activities.  They do one center a day.  When we get to be speedy, they will do two buckets a day.  I wouldn't anticipate that happening until maybe December.

In Fundations, we now are practicing the letters b, f, m, n, o, t, and u.  We have learned the word vowel and how to stretch out the vowel sounds.  We started clapping out syllables of words.  We are learning the words is, see, the, can, and I.  We are excited to start finding them in the books we are reading! This is what the flashcards we use look like:

We finished our first unit in Readers Workshop.  We keep stressing that everyone can now read by telling what they see in the pictures, remembering stories we have heard before, and rereading again.
We have been talking about the beginning, middle, and end of the stories we are reading.  I transferred that to their writing about the weekend paper with a new format.  I was so impressed with the details they were adding to their pictures and how much they had to say about their drawings.  By the end of the year, they will be writing so much to go along with their drawings.

We have been singing "What Do The Letters Say?" and it is a new class favorite.  Click on the title for the link to the youtube video.
