50th Day of School

Last Thursday, we celebrated the fiftieth day of Kindergarten.  It was a blast!  We watched a small clip of I Love Lucy when Lucy and Ethel were working in the chocolate store.  We had a bubble gum blowing contest and wrote about the results.  We played with games and toys from the fifties (Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Mr. Potato Head, and matchbox cars).  We counted to fifty by ones and fives.  We learned about tally marks too.  We read a Madeline book written in the time period too.  The students got a goodie bag of candy from the 1950s to take home.
We are continuing to add letters to our Fundations chart.  We starting to practice the letters without the picture cues and the students are rising to the challenge.  We added for and my to our popcorn words.
Readers Workshop has been teaching us how to be Super Readers.  We use Pointer Power to point to each word.  We use Reread Power to reread when we make a mistake.  We use Partner Power to help each other.  We use Picture Power to look at the picture and figure out a word.  We use Popcorn Word Power to find words that we know and read them in a snap.  We are starting to read level A books in addition to familiar storybooks and read about the world books.
In math we are working on classifying objects into groups.  The students do a fabulous job sorting when the category is given.  It is more difficult to come up with categories on our own.  You can give students a group of small objects (toys, buttons, rocks) and have your child find a category.  Once they sort one way, try to have your child come up with another way.

Books we have read:
