We started a How To writing unit as well. We have learned that How To Books tell us how to do something in steps, the steps are numbered and each step is illustrated. I love reading the books the kindergarteners are writing. Some of the titles include How To Draw A Love Bug, How To Love Your Dad, How To Go Camping, How To Build A Snowman, and lots of how to draw books.
In Math, we are composing (building) and decomposing (breaking apart) numbers. We are learning how to find a missing addend in an equation like 3 + ? = 10. Here's a great game to play to practice this skill. It is called Bears In A Cave. To play, you will need a bowl and bears (Teddy Grahams work great, but any small object will work). Show your child a set of bears. Have your child close his or her eyes and then hide some of the bears in the cave (under the bowl). Your child must figure out how many bears are in the cave. When students have a clear understanding of how to build numbers in different ways, a solid foundation for their math learning is built.
