Read Across America Week

We love to read in kindergarten, so a week celebrating reading was right up our alley.  Read Across America was created to coincide with Dr. Seuss's birthday, and we celebrated by reading lots of silly Dr. Seuss books.  Miss New Hampshire stopped by to say hello to the kindergarteners, and they were in awe!  Dr. Krikorian, the assistant superintendent, was our celebrity reader.  She read us Today I Feel Silly and was impressed with the kindergarteners behavior and responses to her questions.  They were excited to share their knowledge of Readers and Writers Workshops, and gave her some fashion advice.  Judy Pancost also performed for us thanks to the PTA.

Readers and Writers Workshops are overlapping.  We are learning about nonfiction text features in Readers Workshop. Authors and Illustrators use text features to help us notice important things and learn more.  In Writers Workshop we are writing "How To" books.  Some of the books we are reading as models have nonfiction text features.  We can add them to our writing to help our readers learn more or understand.
 
In Math we are learning about Numbers 11-20.  We have been counting and writing the numbers 11-15.  We are noticing that they are ten and some more.  If your child misses a teen number when counting (usually thirteen or fourteen), this topic should help!
